The Lord’s Prayer has been perversely used in a blasphemous video by Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth as the background track for making war:
This blasphemy is driven by a violent God image, as I have described in detail in my book A Violent God-Image (available here from Bloomsbury).
Hegseth and misguided Trump administration colleagues are succumbing to the very temptation the Bible reports Jesus facing.
What would Jesus likely say to this?
1. First, Jesus would call out the blasphemy of turning power and violence into God.
The Bible reports in Mt. 4 of the temptation of Jesus. This temptation consists in confusing God with the opposite of God, “Satan.” This is what Hegseth and Trump’s court prophets have dangerously succumbed to.
